Week Two

Alphabetic Principle-The understanding that letters represent sounds, and those sounds form words. (www.sightwordsgame.com)

Students understand that words are composed of letters and each of those letters represent sounds.

Concepts of Print-Refers to the awareness of how print works. (education.vic.gov.au)

Children understand book orientation, going left to right, print conveys a message, and a distinction between letters, words, and sentences.

Letter Recognition-The ability to visually recognize letters of the alphabet through hands-on learning. (readingrockets.com)

Students will usually first learn to recognize the letters in their name.  They will then begin to recognize those same letters in other words.   Hands on activities, such as flash cards or paint dobbers are great ways to practice letter recognition.

Phonemic Awareness-The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes (sounds). (begintoread.com)

Phonemic awareness is important because it improves students' word reading and comprehension.  It also helps to improve their spelling abilities.

Blending-The action of mixing or combining sounds together. (aacliteracy.psu.edu)

Students combine sounds to make a word.  The sounds of all the letters can be heard, but they aren't said as separate sounds. Students build words from individual sounds.

Segmenting- To separate or divide into segments or parts. (dictionary.com)

Students break apart the sounds in words in order to write the word correctly. Students have the ability to hear the different sounds in words.
